Mugo pines are tough low growing conifers. In a design we like to bring mugos in after the larger trees and shrubs have been placed. That's when you step back and say, "what this garden needs is a series of three mugo pines to accent that tree." That said, we've been know to stick one in a container as well.
- Light: full sun
- Soil: not picky as long as it drains
- Size: 3' -5' tall and up to 6' wide, but that rarely happens in the city. They can be kept smaller with some timely pruning.
- Growth rate: slow, 12" or less per year
- Zone: 2-8
